Jane camp

Jane Camp is an art educator and a working, exhibiting artist.  She is a Distinguished Professor of Art at Heartland Community College and has worked at Heartland since 1994.  She has also taught for Tennessee State University, Illinois State University, and Richland Community College.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and her Master of Science degree and Master of Fine Arts degree from Illinois State University.  Jane’s photographs, drawings, and paintings have been exhibited in many local and national exhibitions. Jane has been fortunate to participate in many collaborative art projects. She successfully co-operated a photography business, Outer Glow Photography, for 10 years.

One theme of her photographic work addressed the waters of the Great Lakes: "Water is Involved.” She received a sabbatical from Heartland Community College to explore the Great Lakes through analog and digital photographic formats. This series was exhibited at the McLean County Art Center the following year. The goal of this body of photos was to show how different cameras capture a similar scene with distinct peculiarities, creating visual interest from the same subject. Photographs created with the Holga, one of the ten cameras Jane uses, have been a mainstay of her photographic work. The soft, vignetting quality of Holga photographs encapsulates an ethereal vision that appeals to Jane’s photographic vision. This camera, along with several others, is her constant companion wherever she wanders.

phil smith

Phil Smith is an Illinois native and has spent much of his life in the Bloomington Normal area.  A little over ten years ago he retired from a career teaching art at the community college level, which included about 15 years of teaching at Heartland Community College in Normal.  Since retiring he has been able to pursue his own artistic interests.  Phil is an oil painter and, prior to his teaching career, earned an MFA in painting from Illinois State University.  The inspiration for Phil’s current painting comes from his lived experience in the midwest and his appreciation for the way light defines its characteristic natural and man made forms.

Rick Harney

Rick Harney is a resident of Normal and graduate of Illinois State University. From his studio located in Bloomington's Cultural District, he makes figurative drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Working with a wide range of sculptural media, including bronze, ceramic, paper mache, and many varieties of wood, he skillfully renders historical figures, family members, and friends. Harney also creates inventive characters, based on events, memories, and feelings in his private life.

His commissioned works include life-sized bronzes of Abraham Lincoln at the Livingston County Courthouse Square in Pontiac, the McLean County History Museum in Bloomington, and the Danville Historical Society in Danville. His sculptures are in the collections of McDonald's Corporate Headquarters in Oakbrook, IL, as well as Country Mutual Insurance Company and the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington. Other public works are on view at Central Catholic High School, Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, and Asahikawa, Japan, (Bloomington/Normal Sister Cities).

Harney has taught both credit courses and noncredit classes at Heartland Community College, community classes at the McLean County Arts Center, and numerous hands-on arts experiences for special populations at local public schools. Nationally, he has led sculpture workshops in Illinois, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
